Lucy Bennett

Lucy Bennett is the Co-Artistic Director of Stopgap Dance Company and has been creating a number of acclaimed dance works for the company since 2003. Artificial Things (2013) is mandatory study material for GCSE Dance, and it was reimagined by Lucy and the film director Sophie Fiennes into a dance film in 2017. It went on to win the coveted Best Screen Choreography of 2019 (over 15 minutes category) at IMZ dancescreen in Wuppertal and was included in The Guardian’s Top Five dance works of the year, following its public release in 2020.

The Enormous Room (2016) toured nationally and internationally to flagship venues including STEPS international Dance Festival in Switzerland, Holland Dance Festival, Brighton Festival, El Festival de Otoño Madrid and The Setagya Public Theatre in Tokyo. Lucy’s most recent outdoor work FROCK premiered at Norfolk and Norwich Festival in 2019 and has received praise from dance aficionados in metropolitan cities like London, Barcelona and Munich, as well as from new audiences in Grimsby, Skegness and Chatham. In 2022 alone, the work was performed 56 times in 19 cities across Europe to some 26,000 people.

Lucy conceived and choreographed Stopgap’s latest touring production Lived Fiction which premiered at Project Arts Centre Dublin. The production that exemplifies how dance and theatre can integrate creative access for Disabled audiences opened The UNLIMITED Festival in 2024 at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall at The Southbank Lived Fiction received 4 and 5 star reviews and again was nominated in The Guardian’s best dance of 2024. Lucy and the team of Disabled, non disabled, Deaf and Neurodivergent creatives also picked up a OneDanceUK award for innovation in dance in 2025 too.

Alongside her choreography, Lucy played a key role in developing Stopgap’s artist development programme and shaped Stopgap to become world-renowned for their inclusive choreographic and teaching practice, leading residencies throughout Europe and Asia.
