Jade Introduces Herself
Jade, our new student intern from the University of Surrey, introduces herself and talks about her first few weeks at Stopgap...
So, I’ve been working as a Student Intern with Stopgap for just over a month now and the time is flying by! It’s safe to say everyone here has been really welcoming and friendly, which made settling in super easy.
Initially, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from my first few days on placement, as it’s quite different to university life! I came to placement wanting to be open minded about every opportunity given to me, in order to make the most of my time here. For the main duration of my placement I will be based in the office; however, being placed with Stopgap means I also have the chance to get out of the office on occasion and join in with some of the more practical side of things – something I was quite excited about when Stopgap accepted me as their new student intern!
On my first weekend after beginning placement, I travelled to Eastleigh where the company were doing rehearsals for ‘The Enormous Room’, meaning I got to spend the day observing behind the scenes of the dancers in action and meet them all which was great. During the afternoon I was able to join in with a movement exercise involving massage which was a relaxing and gentle way of getting my body back into dancing again after the summer break!
During my second week here, I was able to start joining in classes in both Farnham and Guildford with both of their Youth Companies. This was something I was particularly looking forward to prior to starting placement because it meant I could keep up with dancing and also have the chance to build on my teaching skills, something which I am keen to explore in the future. The classes were really enjoyable and despite having witnessed only a few sessions with each group, I can already see the positive and uplifting atmosphere they bring in order to make the sessions enjoyable for both the young people and the teachers.
I am also enjoying being part of the administrative side of the company, as it means I can witness everything the company does from both sides. It also gives me the chance to develop and learn some new transferrable skills that will be useful even after placement. Even though I've only been here for a short amount of time I'm learning so much and I'm sure I will learn even more in the coming months!
Overall, I can definitely say I am already having a wonderful time on placement, and choosing Stopgap was definitely the right choice for me. I am excited to see what else I can experience in the coming months whilst I am here and hope the fun continues!
