Jade's Placement Project
As part of her placement with us, Jade organised a performance for Guildford Youth Company. Here she explains what she's done and the process leading up to the big event...
It’s rather scary to say that I am now in the final weeks of my time here with Stopgap, and soon I’ll be heading into the final stretch of my degree (seriously where does the time go?). But that doesn’t mean there’s not still some exciting things to look forward to before I say goodbye, one of the main things being my placement project! It feels like it’s been a long time in the making, having floated the idea around in December, and now it’s less than a week away!
For my project, I decided to organise a performance opportunity for Guildford Youth Company, as they didn’t have any of the opportunities that other groups did locally to them. Straight away I thought of Actual Size, the student led company based at University of Surrey. Every year they put together a showcase of their work created by the Artistic Directors and their talented dancers, which this year will be performed on 11 May. It got off to a great start when Gabi & Michelle (this year’s Co-Artistic Directors of Actual Size) agreed to have us perform, and it was great sharing the excitement of it with Guildford Youth Company when we told them about the performance.
That doesn’t mean the road to performance day has come without its obstacles however, as there is another performance with Farnham Youth Company earlier in the day I am also performing in as I volunteer with the group, meaning I am going to be busier than I originally thought! It has definitely been interesting figuring out logistics of the entire day rather than just for the one performance, but anyone who knows me, knows I am quite the organised individual so hopefully it will all work out on the day and the hard work will pay off.
For the project, I am handling the organising of Stopgap’s performance, liaising with Actual Size, discussing logistics with everyone here at Stopgap HQ & the participants and their families, sorting the schedule for the day, and will be performing in the piece as well! Safe to say I don’t do things by halves really. I hope that by the end of it, we’ll have a great piece to show and it will be an enjoyable day for all involved. I managed to pay a visit to Actual Size back in February and got an inside look into one of the pieces they created for the show, and I think it’s safe to say the evening as a whole will be full of creativity.

Hope to see some of you there!
