At Stopgap, creative access has become a vital part of our artistic process and approach, shaping our work from the very beginning.  It’s not just about removing barriers, it’s about unlocking new artistic possibilities.

By weaving access into the creative process, we create work that is richer, more innovative, and welcoming to everyone. Our award-winning indoor production Lived Fiction is one example, integrating access as a core artistic element rather than an add-on.

We’re excited to share what we’ve learned, and what we’re still discovering, with more artists and companies, so together we can expand what’s possible.

A duet between a standing dancer and a wheelchair dancer.

A mid-duet moment from Lived Fiction. A standing dancer balances on the shoulder of a wheelchair dancer, she takes hold of the front bars of his chair and tips her head forwards so her legs rise straight and long into the air. Behind them, creative captions project the audio description: 'Taking off in a lift, its her feet I notice, knowing exactly where to land before taking off again, diving onto his shoulder, body long like an arrow on a bow'.

Why Creative Access?

For over two decades, Stopgap has been an exemplar of diversity and inclusion on stage. But being a global leader in inclusive dance means going further than showcasing Disabled talent. Now, we’re committed to making dance accessible to the widest possible range of audiences.

Our goal is for performers and audiences to share the same inclusive experience, celebrating the joy of different people coming together in the theatre space. Creative access is how we make that happen.
